Yarn Used:

I chose to use a #3 DK cotton. I know it’s a little less sturdy than high weight cottons, but I loved the colors. I also love the feel of this cotton. Because it was going to be a good size wall hanging, I had already decided to use plastic canvas to create a sturdy base. Yardage: 120 yds MC, 60 yds CC, 40 yds stems/leaves, 205 yds flower box

Supplies used in this crochet flower wall hanging:

US F hook (3.75 mm)

Tapestry needle for sewing and weaving ends.

Plastic Canvas (while this is optional it is recommended for stability)

36” x 1” Wooden Dowel or a sturdy stick

Gauge:

one hexagon = 4” / 20 ribbed rows of flower box = 4”

Skill Level:

Advanced beginner +

Finished Size:

Hangs from a 36″ dowel and the hanging extends down 24″-Flower Box is 30″ wide

Abbreviation Used: US Terms

MC = main color

CC = contrasting color

MR = Magic Ring

beg = beginning

ch = chain

ch-2 sp = chain 2 space

ch-1 sp = chain 1 space

dc = double crochet

HBhdc = Herringbone half double crochet

hdc = half double crochet

hdc in 3rd loop = half double crochet in 3rd loop

rep = repeat

sc = single crochet

sl st = slip stitch

st (s) = stitch(es)

Special Stitches used in this crochet flower wall hanging:

Hdc in 3rd lp: place a hdc in 3rd loop of the hdc on the inside of the row.

HBhdc: yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull through st and first loop on hook, yo, pull through remaining 2 loops.

Notes:

  • Ch 3 counts as a stitch.
  • You will use 7 small hexagons to create each flower.
  • Sewing is required to join hexagons together and flowers to stems and box.
  • You will turn after sl st in 1st st for the hexagons.

Helpful Hints:

  1. Blocking your hexagons before sewing together will help keep them all uniform.
  2. Using plastic canvas or other materials, like foam or cardboard creates a sturdy hanging.

Assembly:

Flowers:

The final round of each hexagon is considered the right side. Using 6 of your MC and 1 of your CC, flip each hexagon to the wrong side. Line them up in the flower shape. Using a long piece of your main color, sew them together in the back loops. Repeat for each of the flowers.

Plastic Canvas:

Place all your pieces on plastic canvas or your chosen medium, trace the pieces. Cut out your traced shapes slightly smaller than your crocheted pieces. This will allow you room to sew pieces together.

Either sew or glue your pieces to the plastic canvas. I chose to glue with Aleene’s Fabric Glue. Sew the flowers together with middle flower slightly above the outer flowers.

Stems/Leaves:

Sew your leaf hexagon behind the stem in the middle. Sew your stems to the backs of the flowers. Sew the other ends of the stems to the back of the flower box.

Hanger:

Tie double stranded pieces of yarn to the corners of flowers and to the dowel.

    How can you clean this wonderful project after you put on the plastic canvas?

    1. Hi Angela,
      That is the biggest drawback with plastic canvas on it, you would only be able to spot clean it.
