Inspiration for this crochet bookmark

Being an avid flower lover, and missing it during the colder months, when I chose to create a bookmark for an event I was participating in, I knew it had to incorporate a flower. Every summer, sitting on my porch in a pot is a gorgeous hibiscus plant. The flowers are big, beautiful, and five-petaled. I strove to bring as much of that to this bookmark as I could. I hope it will bring you some joy to use it in the chilly winter months, and think about the not so distant future when flowers bloom again.

Yarn Used

I chose to use cotton for this free crochet bookmark. Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton is my go-to for cotton yarn. I love the sheen of it, the choice of colors, and it’s durability. And one of my top reasons-it’s doesn’t split. That’s one of my biggest pet peeves with yarn. And you only need a small amount so you can use up your stash.

US F (3.75 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

Tapestry needle for weaving ends

Special Stitches used in this free crochet bookmark:

HBhdc {herringbone hdc}= yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull through st and first loop on hook, yo, pull through remaining 2 loops.

Puff Stitch: yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull up a loop 4x, yo pull through all loops on hook, ch 1

Notes:

• Ch 3 counts as a stitch
• The middle section of the bookmark can be adjusted for different length books. {shorter for paperback, longer for hardcover}

One of the best features of this free crochet bookmark pattern is the adjustability of the middle section of the bookmark. Each maker can decide how long or short to make it based on what size books they typically read.

Pattern instructions for this free crochet bookmark:

Flower:

Rnd 1: With Color 1, using MR, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, *3 dc, ch 2; rep from * 3 more times, join in top of ch 3, changing to Color 2  [15 dc, 5 ch 2-sp]

Rnd 2: ch 3, dc in next 2 sts, 2 Puff sts in next ch 2-sp, *dc in next 3 sts, 2 Puff sts in next ch 2-sp; rep from * 3 more times, join in top of ch 3 [15 dc, 10 Puff st]

Rnd 3: ch 3, 3 tr in next st, dc in next st, hdc in top of 1^st Puff st, sc in ch 1-sp, hdc in top of next Puff st, *dc in next st, 3 tr in next st, dc in next st, hdc in top of 1^st Puff st, sc in ch 1-sp, hdc in top of next Puff st; rep from * 3 more times, join in same st as ch 3 [10 dc, 15 tr, 10 hdc, 5 sc]

Do not fasten off.

Here is where you will make the middle section of the bookmark. The number of chs depend on how long you want it, remembering 20 HBhdc = 4”. For reference, hardcover books can range from 9-11” length and paperbacks from 8.5-9”.

Row 1: Chain your desired amount and add 1 chain, Hbhdc in 2^nd ch from hook, and in each ch across, turn, sl st in next st on flower

Row 2: ch 1, HBhdc in each st across, turn

Row 3: ch 1, HBhdc in each st across, sl st in next st on flower. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Leaf:

With leaf color, ch 11, tr in 4^th ch from hook, tr in next 3 sts, dc in next 2 sts, hdc in last 2 sts, working on other side of chain, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next 2 sts, tr in next 4sts, sl in bottom of ch 3, then ch 3, sl st in 2^nd ch from hook and in next ch, sl st in next st on the leaf. Fasten off. Weave in end.

Sew leaf to bottom of bookmark.
