Mosaic Crochet Bag Pattern

Mosaic meets granny stitch in this chic, modern mosaic crochet bag. If you’ve never tried this semi easy technique, this is the pattern to try. I’ll admit, I was a little intimated to learn it at first. But you quickly get the hang of it. I chose a super simple design for the bottom and top of the Aztec Granny Bag. I felt it reminded me of Aztec or even Egyptian symbols.

Supplies needed for this mosaic crochet bag

#4 cotton or cotton blend {I used a hand-dyed from Cascade Yarns} 200-220 yds of each Color A and Color B

US G (4mm) Hook {I love my Furls Hooks}

Tapestry Needle

Optional: Set of 2 Size:

Bag measures approx. 12” width x 10” height x 4”depth

The premium PDF includes the chart and written instructions for the mosaic section. One of the best parts of this mosaic crochet bag is the fact it’s worked in the round, which means no weaving of ends. You will drop and pick up the two colors as you work. Working the granny stitch in between the top and bottom balances out the bag perfectly.

Crochet Inspiration

It all started with a workshop and small beta class on overlay mosaic crochet taught by my fellow entrepreneur friend Erin, from Juniper & Oakes. I didn’t know anything about Mosaic until then. She taught us, first the basics of it, and then how to make our own. The symbol in this bag is my first mosaic design I created in that class. If you want to learn more about this technique, you should definitely follow her. If you are interested in the class, hit the button below for more information.

So now I had the design, but what should I make with it? I thought it would look super cute in a bag. Then my good friend Fiona from Cosy Rosie UK was hosting an event using the granny stitch. And just like that Mosaic met Granny Stitch, and the rest is history.

Tester Version

My tester, Ethy did a fabulous job on her Aztec Granny Bag. The white on black really pops. And can we talk about those handles! They complete the bag.
