The yarn used in this mosaic crochet wall hanging

Now if you have followed me for awhile, you know I love my cotton yarn, especially for wall hangings. For the Patriotic Mosaic Wall Hanging, I decided to use up some of my acrylic stash. I chose Caron Simply Soft as it had the colors I was looking for. I knew I would only be using once a year, so I wasn’t worried about wear and tear. The fun part about this hanging is the ability to use any colors to make it a year round decoration.

  • This pattern uses the overlay mosaic technique.

  • If working an envelope border, place a chain after each beginning border stitch and before each ending border stitch. You will work in these chains when making the border.

  1. Working mosaic in rows, you will fasten off after completing each row. Then start your new color at the beginning of each row.
  2. Includes chart.

If making an envelope border, tie two ends together along each of the sides and cut them to about 1” before moving on to the border. To make the border less bulky, consider going down a hook size.

Stars

I joined the stars directly to the hanging using Fsc. If you are not comfortable using that, you can use a chain. You will have a star in each corner, then two evenly spaced in the middle.

Join Color A to the top row of wall hanging in your desired st, Fsc 12, ch 4, sl st in 4th ch from hook to create a ring. OR ch 16, sl st in 4th ch from hook to create ring.

Place 10 sc in ring, sl st in 1st st, *ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, sk st on the circle, sl st next st; rep from * 4x {five points of star made} Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing.

Repeat this process to make 3 more stars.

With hanging facing right side and star facing right side, fold the long strip of each star to make a loop. Secure with the long tail. Also, secure bottom of star to top of wall hanging. Refer to this VIDEO for visual help.

Slide a wooden dowel or stick through the loops. Tie yarn to both ends of dowel to make loop for hanging on the wall.
