What is Overlay Mosaic Crochet?
A basic knowledge of overlay mosaic crochet is required with this pattern. While overlay mosaic crochet may seem intimidating, this small project is the perfect way to start. It is a simple technique used to create designs and colorful patterns by overlaying stitches on top of one another. The basics:
- One row is worked at a time. Each row alternates colors.
- Only two basic stitches are used, single crochet and double crochet.
- You single crochet in the back loops and double crochet in the front loops of the rows below, which are the “overlay stitches.”
- Designs typically provided in chart form, showing where each stitch is placed.

Helpful Hints For Making this Overlay Mosaic Crochet Pillow
- Try to keep your tension even for both the solid and mosaic sections
- While some leaning of your work is typical in overlay mosaic, pulling it slightly every few rows will help straighten it out. As will the border.
- Using stitch markers is helpful to keep your count correct.
