A basic knowledge of overlay mosaic crochet is required with this pattern. Some people feel overlay mosaic crochet is intimidating, but it’s really not as long as you know the basics. It is a simple technique to create the design by overlaying stitches on top of one another.
The basics:
- One row is worked at a time.
- Each row you alternate colors.
- Two basic stitches used, single crochet in the back loops and double crochet in the front loops in the row below.
- The front loop double crochets lay over top of the single crochets “covering” up where you don’t want that color to show.
- Designs typically include chart form, showing where each stitch is placed.

Mosaic Tulip Chart
Row 23: With Color A, join at the beginning of the previous row, ch 1, hdc in each st across, turn [51]
Rows 24-41 : ch 1, Ehdc in the middle loop of the hdc, turn
Row 42: ch 1, sc in each st across {this is the first row of the 2nd mosaic section}
Do not turn at the end of Row 42. Fasten off.
You will now be fastening off each row. Join Color B to the beginning of Row 42 on the right side of the work. The mosaic section will be facing you.
Rows 43-63: Follow mosaic chart or written instructions Rows 2-22.
You have two choices for the border. One border, knot all ends tightly and trim to about 1”. They will be on the back of the hanging and not show. That is what I chose to do. Or make an envelope border and sandwich the ends in between.
Border:
The right side of the hanging should be facing you, the side with the mosaic pictures.
Rnd 1: Join Color B to any non-corner stitch of Row 63. Sc in FLO of each st to the corner st, (sc, ch 1, sc) in FLO of corner, sc down the length of blanket in the v-shaped stitches of the mosaic and in ends of rows of the non-mosaic section to the next corner, (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, sc in FLO across Row 1 to next corner, (sc, ch 1, sc) in FLO of corner, sc up the length of blanket in the v-shaped stitches of the mosaic and in the ends of the rows of the non-mosaic section to the next corner,, (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, sc in FLO of remaining sts. sl st in beg st
Rnd 2: ch 2, dc in BLO in each st, (dc, ch 1, dc) in each corner, around, sl st in beg st
Rnd 3: ch 1, sc in BLO in each st, (sc, ch1, sc) in each corner around, sl st in beg st
Fasten off.
If you choose to do an envelope border, rep Rnds 1-3 on the back of the hanging. Trim and sandwich the ends in between. Join both sides of the border with a sc in BLO around. Fasten off. Weave in any remaining ends.
Hanger:
- Join chosen yarn to corner of wall hanging, ch 10-12, sl st in same st. Fasten off.
- Repeat in the other corner
- Repeat 2-3 times in the middle of the hanger.
- Weave in ends.
- Slide the dowel through the loops.
Alternatively, you could attach the dowel by, joining the yarn in the corner and then single crochet across around the dowel.
